SPECIFIC LEARNING DISABILITIES MANUAL

AN INSERVICE TRAINING MANUAL FOR REGULAR CLASSROOM TEACHERS

Based on the December 1, 2001 Child Count, school districts in Arkansas were identifying 5.06% of the school population as being specific learning disabled (SLD). Thus, it is reasonable to expect that almost every educator will have an opportunity to work with students with specific learning disabilities at some point in their career. The framers of Arkansas Act 338 of 1991, recognizing that these students receive the majority of their instruction within the regular classroom, set forth this training requirement as an effort to enhance the skills of the regular teachers, thus increasing their effectiveness in teaching those students.

Inservice, pursuant to Arkansas Act 338 of 1991, has a two-fold purpose: (1) to assist educators in recognizing the characteristics of SLD students and how those characteristics affect students' learning styles and behaviors, and (2) to provide strategies for use by educators in addressing the needs of these students in the regular classroom.

All school districts in Arkansas have received a copy of this training program developed to meet the requirements of Arkansas Act 338 on 1991. A district may choose whether to make use of this inservice program. However, the Act requires that each district keep on file a plan for identifying children with specific disabilities and for incorporating strategies for those students in the regular classroom.
